GEORGE TOWN: A proposal to include Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s wife Betty Chew in the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce’s (PCCC) newly established property development, construction and management committee has courted controversy.
Penang Citizens Awareness Chant Group adviser Yan Lee said it was shocking that the offer was extended to the Chief Minister’s wife.
“Whether it is a conflict of interest should Chew choose to accept the offer, we leave it to her to answer as she should know better since she is a member of the Malaysian Bar,” Yan said.
An online news portal reported yesterday that accusations of a “conflict of interest” had surfaced following the listing of Chew’s name in the committee since PCCC’s adviser is property developer Tan Kok Ping. The report noted that Lim heads the executive committee on land matters in Penang.
Chew could not be reached for comment.
PCCC president Datuk Seri Choot Ewe Seng said Chew had yet to indicate her decision.
He said those appointed to the committee would give their time to serve the community with nothing to gain materially.
“We appoint only those who can contribute professionally. Since Chew is not a politician, we don’t see any conflict of interest,” Choot said.
PCCC vice-president Datuk Finn Choong said should Chew decline the post, he would look for another professional, either a banker, lawyer or accountant, to fill it as they were familiar with the problems in the property development sector. - The Star
